The Buzz Word on Everyone’s Lips!
BY SANDRA MYATTE
The sunless tanning industry has soared within the last
few years as statistics show the increasing number of skin
cancer cases reported nationwide. Tans continue to be
popular, especially with people who naturally have light
skin. But given the fact that exposure to the tanning rays
of the sun and tanning beds, is accompanied by skin
damage and or increased risk of skin cancer, these days
many people are opting for “sunless” tans.
The most effective sunless tanning products contain
dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA is
colorless and is derived from glycerine, that interacts with
the amino acids in dead skin cells are constantly being
shed, the color change produced by DHA usually lasts
about five to seven days, and in some cases as long as ten
days.
DHA, is not absorbed through the skin into the body and
it has no known toxicity. The Germans first discovered
DHA in the late 1920’s when DHA spilled on the skin and
produced a brown color. DHA has been listed with the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1973, and has
been used in cosmetic preparations for over 30 years.
Sunless tanning has increased in popularity as it offers
a safe alternative to a natural golden tan and a healthy
looking skin that leaves you with a sense of well-being.
Many salon owners are now offering this value add
service just not as extra revenue to their business but also
to raise awareness to their clients on safe choices.
Hence, everyone can benefit from this treatment,
popular amongst corporate executives, brides, and people
who want to have an overall glow on a special occasion,
prom parties. Some people get this service done before
vacationing so they don’t stand out. Most models and
movie stars choose this method to keep a younger looking
skin.
How to make the right purchase for a system suited to
your needs, there are a few considerations that will come
in play to determine the right tool for your environment.
Here are some of the factors that will determine the right
choice. The type of salon or spa you operate, the noise
level, space access, type of clientele and the amount of
volume.
Lets look at some of the popular system available on
the market: Airbrush and compressor system were the
original application medium for airbrush tanning. They
have been used successfully for several years. Those who
have small spray areas, low ventilation, favour this
system and with the double action brush you can do
make-up applications and temporary tattoos. Silent
systems, which may be better suited in spas or Doctors
office. Small compressors are very mobile and great for
detailed work. Typical sessions will take 20-25 minutes
including drying time; the application is done by small
circular movements.
In recent years, busy salons have started trading in their
airbrushes for speedier spray guns. Low volume Low
Pressure (LVLP) and High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP).
These systems, spray more volume of product than an
airbrush. It consists of single or double turbines thus
delivering the product at a higher speed, technically a
spray gun as a tip PSI of 10 or greater. Meaning faster
applications, 5-10 minutes per application. These systems
often come with an air drying action as well, for minimal
drying time and clients can dress immediately. Other
benefits are: faster clean-up, minimal clogging, larger
width spray pattern. Often this type of system does not
require cleaning between applications. This system is
suited for high volume clientele, such as hair salons or
mobile spray technicians. Applied in long vertical and
horizontal movements. HVLP and LVLP guns with lower tip
PSI have less product” bounce back” from the skin
surface. This can create less over spray. Good properly set
ventilation options should be addressed. Another factor to
consider are replacement parts and warranties for all
systems.
Solutions are not all created equal. In recent years,
manufacturers are developing better formulas. What to
look for in choosing a good solution is the viscosity,
natural state of ingredients, and intensity levels. Some
come with added bronzers that gives instant color
gratification, and clear solutions that are ideal for
weddings, or special occasion that will not transfer the
color unto the garments. Product durability, shelf life and
the “no green factor” are also important. Trying different
solutions is the way to best determine the outcome of the
product. Many distributors offer sample sizes for you to
try and see if this is the right product for your and your
clientele. Demos, and hands on training will facilitate your
purchase.
Offering this value add service to your salon, not only
offers the opportunity to educate your clients, it can also
be very lucrative to your business revenue, minimal
investment is required and the income potential is
enormous.
